One of Imre Hermann’s most important achievements in the field of psychoanalysis was the introduction of the term ‘clinging instinct’. This instinct is essential; without it the individual would perish and the species could not survive either. Hermann supposes that the reflexes of human infants to grab and embrace are leftovers from the instinct of primates to cling to their parents. The clinging instinct draws attention to the important correlation between biological and psychological needs, which influence the basic reactions and behaviour of human beings.Hermann believes that the clinging instinct is thwarted in the case of humans due to the lack of fur to which infants could cling.
